Jeanette's sweet-sour red cabbage

Ingredients
4 slices of bacon
1 head red cabbage, shredded
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 medium apple, peeled and chopped
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp salt
generous dash of black pepper
Directions
1. In dutch oven, cook bacon until crisp, remove to paper towels.
2. Add shredded cabbage, onion, and apple to dutch oven.
3. Add water, vinegar, salt, pepper, and brown sugar to dutch oven.
4. Stir to mix.
5. Cover and simmer so juices bubble gently.
6. Cook about 1 hour or until tender.
7. Add crumbled bacon and serve.
